We get to meet so many wonderful people through our work of renovating old houses. It is true that it takes a certain kind of person to love living in an old home. We find that, more often than not, we have much in common with the homeowners. We all love art, music, being kind and, most telling of all, history.

When we met the Thatchers, we knew we would be longtime friends. They are happy, loving and appreciative people. They love their house for what it is and do not mourn what it might be missing. An old house is never perfect—it has its rough edges, imperfect and uneven floors and cracking walls.

The foundations aren’t made with cement and rebar yet they’ve stood the test of time. So much of this can be compared to people in general—we aren’t perfect, but we have character and quirks, things that make us all unique.
